A phone is small, valuable and fragile, and it contains a lithium battery. Ship it well and the buyer is happy. Ship it badly and you face a broken-screen return, a “not received” claim, or worse. Here’s a packing and shipping routine that holds up.
Before you pack: document everything
Disputes are won with evidence. For each phone:
- Photograph or film the phone powered on, showing the IMEI screen (dial *#06#) and the condition, just before you pack it.
- Record the IMEI next to the order number in your records.
- Photograph the sealed package with the label attached.
If a buyer claims the phone arrived broken, or returns a different one, this is your proof.
Box or mailer?
- Phones: use a small rigid box. A padded mailer alone won’t stop a crushed screen. A snug box with cushioning on all sides is the standard.
- Accessories (cases, cables, protectors): padded mailers are fine and keep weight and package size down, which matters for cheap Ground Advantage rates.
How to pack a phone
- Power the phone off (or at least on airplane mode) so it can’t switch on in transit.
- Wrap it in a screen-safe layer (a soft sleeve or foam pouch), then bubble wrap.
- Put it in the box with at least 2–3 cm of cushioning on every side. Shake test: nothing should move.
- Put chargers and cables in a separate bag so they can’t scratch the screen.
- Seal the box with tape across every seam. Don’t reuse a box covered in old labels.
If you include the original retail box, put that box inside a shipping box. Don’t stick the label on the retail box.
Lithium batteries: the rules matter
Phones contain lithium-ion batteries, and carriers have specific rules for mailing devices that contain them. For USPS, the requirements are in USPS Publication 52 (Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail). Read the current section on lithium batteries before you ship, especially for international mail, where the rules are stricter. Never ship a phone with a swollen or damaged battery.
Choosing the service
- Tracking on every package. eBay’s seller protections depend on valid tracking uploaded on time.
- Signature confirmation on high-value phones. eBay’s policy is that sellers need signature confirmation on orders of $750 or more to be covered against “item not received” claims. Check eBay’s current seller protection page for the threshold and details.
- Buy labels in eBay Seller Hub. eBay labels upload tracking automatically and are usually discounted against retail rates.
- Ship fast. Same- or 1-business-day handling is one of the requirements for Top Rated Plus, which takes 10% off your percentage fee (see ways to cut eBay fees).
Keep shipping costs from eating your profit
- Weigh every package. A cheap digital scale pays for itself the first time it stops you from rounding up to the next weight tier.
- Use the smallest box that still gives proper cushioning. Package size affects the price.
- Remember the fee effect: shipping you charge the buyer is part of the total sale, so eBay takes its percentage of it. Use the fee calculator to compare “free shipping at a higher price” with “charged shipping”. The fee works out about the same either way, so pick whichever converts better in your category.
